In honor of Mother's Day, yours truly has compiled a list of films where pregnancy plays a role. The part may not always be major, but it is memorable for a variety of reasons.

Long before reality TV took over the airwaves (but shortly after PBS pioneered the form with “An American Family”), Albert Brooks made his directing debut with “Real Life,” a hilarious spoof of a genre that barely existed in 1979.

Genuine costumed characters are the focus of “Confessions of a Super Hero,” a new documentary that manages to be funny, sad and touching, usually at the same time.

It’s 2008 and Bret Michaels is still relevant, new wave is the new emo and the money you spend on gas driving to a concert will cost you more than the actual ticket. Thankfully, a ridiculous amount of really good music has started flying out of studios from Portland, Ore., to Gothenburg, Sweden.

Ladies and gentlemen: Stop your engines! And as you leave the track, try to avoid the mangled wreckage of “Speed Racer,” Andy and Larry Wachowski’s over-glitzed, under-written and just plain annoying remake of the Saturday morning cartoon classic.

The summer movie season is here. There’s some big hitters coming, but what’s the most likely bomb?

Today, I’m spotlighting a monster movie that sneaked into theaters way back in 1990 with no fanfare and carved out a well-deserved reputation as a thrilling, chilling, funny and fun film.

Despite the carefully orchestrated hype and prerelease Internet fan frenzy, “Cloverfield” didn’t revolutionize the horror film. It didn’t break new ground in on-screen terror, and it didn’t strike a national chord the way “The Blair Witch Project” (an obvious influence) did nine years ago.

Though it begins on Christmas Eve and winds up the next morning, “The Ice Harvest” is not your typical yuletide movie. It’s a razor-sharp, pitch-black dark comedy that manages to be funny, bloody, surprising and smart.

Sometimes a silly comedy, even when it’s completely predictable, can be better than taking a gamble on those serious thriller/mysteries.

Jason Segel stars in the new movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and he can be seen weekly on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” but I’ll always think of him as Nick, the lovable loser, on “Freaks and Geeks,” one of the best shows in TV history.

It’s that time of the week again, and what’s on tap for a Friday night movie? Unfortunately this week I’m under orders from my step-monster to see “88 Minutes” with her. That’s OK, because, you may remember, it was one to which I was looking forward.

Nothing’s left to the imagination, at least when it comes to Jason Segel’s anatomy, in the new comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Just a few minutes in, when the title character, played by Kristen Bell, is breaking up with Segel’s character, Peter Bretter, there he is, in all his glory, stark naked, fully frontal, getting the bad news.
