Awkward.  Frustrating.  Exasperating.  And those are just a few of the adjectives Greensburg’s Clint Young used recently to describe his first two years as a head high school football coach.  Now that the Rangers will have an actual home field this season and a chance for a fresh start, is it time for GHS football to rise above mediocrity?

   Much as the City of Greensburg has done in recent weeks in regard to building permit fees, Kiowa County has moved to bring charges for dumping concrete and demolition in its landfill in line with that of surrounding counties.

   Though the start of school is still a good six weeks away the conditions under which the ’08-’09 term ended for county schools as well as the ongoing, visible progress on the new $50 million County School taking shape in Greensburg begs a mid-summer check on what lies ahead for Kiowa County public education come the resumption of classes next month.

   “I can’t believe my (tax) money is going to pay for this $5 million thing (Courthouse remodeling project).”  Pepper that statement with a few well-chosen expletives and you get a sense of the kind of comments County officials such as Travis Barnes have been hearing in recent weeks regarding the cost of ongoing and soon-to-be-completed rebuilding projects.

Nearly a month after county senior citizens were first offered the opportunity to eat lunch on weekdays with Carriage House residents, the number of those doing so has slowly but steadily grown since, with the high water mark of nine having been reached last Wednesday according to manager Steve Dawson.

Offering something for free can bring a variety of respondents out of the woodwork, as Greensburg’s Matt Deighton has discovered in recent weeks.
