Accuweather.com meteorologist Mike Smith spoke to a packed house at the newly constructed Kiowa County Senior Center on Saturday morning. In a sweeping multi-media presentation that spanned nearly fifty years of meteorological advancements, Smith shared facts, figures and rarely seen and heard audio and video to affirm his belief that modern advancements in weather forecasting has saved hundreds if not thousands of lives, including hundreds more that could have been killed on May 4, 2007 by the tornado that destroyed Greensburg.
Though there were no massive crowds or overflowing storefronts, small groups of visitors and area residents enjoyed a weekend full of events that showcased the progress made following the May 4, 2007 tornado.

A selection of Kiowa County High School students traveled north last weekend to compete at the Fort Hays State University Technology Fair. Five years from their last appearance at the fair, Kiowa County students took home numerous awards and honors for their projects.
The events of May 4, 2007, mean different things to each of the current and former Greensburg residents who survived the storm. Whether it was the loss of their home and possessions or the loss of a loved one, each person will carry the events of that night with them for the rest of their lives. For one local boy the monumental disaster will be forever linked to his birthday.
