Levi Henry “Hank” Heidrich, age 92, passed away March 30, 2013, in Colorado Springs, CO. Hank was born in Falls City, Nebraska on August 1, 1920, and married Evelyn Florence Engelman on May 22,1943. She preceded him in death in 2008.
Hank enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Washington University in St. Louis and University of Wyoming for additional language study. He served in army intelligence and psychological warfare as a cryptographer in Luxembourg, Germany and France during World War II. Hank’s additional education included receiving his accounting certification at Wichita University, attending St. John’s College in Winfield and St. Louis Concordia Seminary. Hank learned German at home, learned Hebrew and Greek at the seminary, and learned Italian and French in the army.
After the war, Hank and Evelyn resided in Perryton, TX, Beaver, OK, Wichita, Hutchinson, Maple Hill and Herrington, KS and Walsh, CO before moving to Greensburg, KS in 1956. For over 25 years they operated the Greensburg Hotel & Café, the Ranger Café, or Heidrich’s Café in Greensburg along with operating the Comanche Café in Coldwater one year. In 1993, they moved to Ft. Dodge, KS and Hank
moved to CO in 2012.
While living in Maple Hill, KS, Hank was president of the school board that built the first school with indoor plumbing. He served as Commander and Chaplain of American Legion posts in Maple Hill, Greensburg and Ft. Dodge. He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dodge City.
Hank is survived by four sons, Jerry of Colorado Springs, CO, Don of Ottawa, IL, Bob and wife Merilee of Spring Hill, TN, Ken and wife Laura of Manhattan, IL, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Green, Ruth Valdez, sister-in-law Geraldine Heidrich and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Evelyn, Hank was preceded in death by a son Stephen, two brothers and six sisters.
