The number four seed Maverick Men (12-8) will face the number five seed Sterling Black Bears (9-11) in the opening round of Wednesday’s substate taking place at Sterling College.
The Black Bears, helmed by Derek Schneider, finished 6-6 in District play ending their regular season with a pair of wins against Lyons (62-57) and Smoky Valley (52-44).
The Bears are led by three seniors, Austin Maxwell, who finished with a team-leading 109 season points, averaging 16 points per game, Kirk Englland (13PPG) and Jake Jaderston (10PPG).
The Bears do most of their damage in the paint.
Jaderston led the Bears in 3-pointers, but sunk only 15-of-57 on the season.
Both Maxwell and Engelland will draw fouls and led the team in trips to the free throw line.
If the Mavs advance, they would play the winner of the number one seeded Little River (16-4) vs. the number eight seed Pratt-Skyline (2-18) match on Thursday.
The number six seed Lady Mavs (10-9) have drawn number three seed Little River (13-7) and will face a tough Redskins squad that finished top in their division with a 6-1 record.
The Redskins went on a tear mid-season, winning four straight against Bennington (37-34), Goessel (56-27), Wakefield (38-24) and Solomon (31-28).
If the Lady Mavs advance they would face the winner of the number two seed Sterling (17-3) vs. number seven seed Inman (6-14) match on Friday.
