The Kiowa County Mavericks lost Friday’s league game against the Minneola Wildcats 52-49.
Caleb Davis and Damien Odle had double digit scoring performances, while Minneola’s Gary Stewart, Jason Brill and Brandy Schumate made up the lion’s share of the Wildcat offense.
Davis continued his aerial assault from behind the 3-point line, sinking 6-of-10 shooting .640 from the field with three rebounds and four steals.
Davis is shooting .470 from the field, .390 from the 3-point line and .810 from the free-throw line so far this season, leading on total points (127), points per game (16) and steals (33).
Odle had a bit of a bounce back game with his first double-digit game since a 16-point performance against So. Central in a 46-20 win on Dec. 11.
Odle had 14 points with nine rebounds and a pair of steals.
The “blonde bomber” has had a slow start this season shooting .420 from the field with 93-season points and 55 rebounds in the first eight games.
Odle has to make up some ground if he wants to reach his 2011-2012 totals. Last season he finished with a .550 field-goal percentage, 222 season points and 166 rebounds in twenty games.
The Mavericks won the first half 33-25, in large part to holes in the Wildcats defense and a strong two quarters from Davis, Odle and Rustin Ardery.
Minneola figured out the Mavs in the third quarter outscoring Kiowa County 15-6.
Minneola lead by a single point entering the final frame and slid by the Mavs, winning the final quarter 12-10.
The extremely physical game, punctuated by some static between the Wildcats Matt McClaren and a couple of Kiowa County Mavericks, boiled over in the tight fourth.
Mavericks Head Coach Nick Perez took issue with the foul totals and made his displeasure known to each referee that passed his bench.
The final box score reflects what might be an inequity as Minneola had 22 trips to the free-throw line, while Kiowa County had only five.
The Kiowa County Mavericks (5-3) will face the Central Plains Oilers (4-4) on Tues. Jan. 8 and will return to Kiowa County on Friday to face the Kinsley Coyotes (2-6) in their homecoming match.
