First-half goals hobble Raiders’ hopes for win; Leavenworth can't capitalize vs. Vikings

Hamstrung by injuries and sickness, a shorthanded Immaculata soccer team hosted Eudora Tuesday.
Under charcoal skies, the Raiders allowed two first half goals from which it never could recover. Little over a half later, Imac lost 3-0.
“With all the mixing we’ve had to do, it’s really taking it’s toll on us,” Immaculata coach Frank Mazeitis said. “The only consistent thing has been our defense and eventually, that wears down too.”
Through the course of the match’s opening 20 minutes, the Raiders held its visitors at bay.
Despite the effort, however, Eudora snuck in two goals in the 22nd and 36th minutes to boast a 2-0 advantage at half. Another strike in the 55th minute gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage, which it sat on.
“The second half, we hit the cross bar and had a couple shots close to it,” Mazeitis said. “We played better and it could’ve been 2-2, but we just couldn’t finish.”
Phillip Hernandez had 33 saves on the day as the home team was out-shot 36-10. Mark Hernandez had five of those Raider shots.
Imac, 3-9-1, will host Perry-Lecompton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Vikings pick apart Pioneers
Scoring chances came in bunches for the Leavenworth boys’ soccer team Tuesday.
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, those opportunities could not be turned into goals. Hosting Shawnee Mission West, LV lost 8-2.
“We let in a few easy goals and it’s hard to get out of a hole like that,” Leavenworth coach Ken Lott said. “We had a lot of scoring chances, especially in the second half, but just couldn’t finish.”
After the Vikings got on top by a few strikes early, Evan Lott buried a penalty kick for the Pioneers to put the home team on the board. Nonetheless, by half it was 7-1. In the second period, each team poked in a score, Leavenworth’s coming from Michael Carico.
“The good thing is that we are creating those scoring chances, but now we have to just capitalize on them,” Lott said.
Leavenworth, 0-12, will be at Topeka West today for a 6 p.m. contest.
