In week three the Kiowa County Mavericks had trouble containing the combined passing and rushing power of Macksville Mustangs QB Tanner Tranbarger. They will face a similar challenge in week four, as they face a Kinsley Coyotes team that can win with a passing game, with a ground game or, more likely, with both.
The Mavericks will face a diverse offensive team in the Coach Jeff Chambers-led Coyotes, who, despite a losing record (1-2), have begun to click offensively.
The Coyotes are averaging about 250 passing yards and about 135 rushing yards per game, largely due to the tandem of senior QB #5 Nathan Frame and senior running back #20 Tyson Espinosa. Statistics for Kinsley’s week three loss against Fairfield were unavailable.
Frame passed for 1,887 yards, second best in the league behind Macksville’s Seth Filbert, averaging 235 yards per game during the 2011-2012 season, behind strong performances from receivers Levi Hirsh and #81 Gustavo Chavez.
This season Frame has already passed the 500-yard mark in passing and seems poised to improve on last year’s offensive numbers, especially since Chavez has returned this season.
The Mavericks need to shut down Espinoza.
A triple threat, he is leading the team in rushing yards, he is second in pass reception and leads a top heavy Coyotes defense with 16 tackles. His diversity will cause problems for the Mavericks, if the Kiowa County defense can’t contain him.
Last season he rushed for a team leading 549 yards, with four 50+ yard runs in six games. His 277 receiving yards also show that he has good hands and that Coach Chambers is not afraid to move him to where he is needed.
Wide receiver #34 Taylor Abel is also one to watch, as the strong number three man the 6’ 155 lb senior rounds out a very diverse Coyotes offense.
Defensively, Kinsley is stacked with big men. Watch for 6’2” 270 lb lineman #74 Greg Newson, who can muscle his way into the backfield.
The Kiowa County Mavericks face the Kinsley Coyotes on Friday Sept. 21 in Kinsley.
