The Greensburg Recreation 3rd and 4th grade football team rolled to their second victory of the season by defeating Bucklin last Saturday at the Kiowa County Schools football field.
Greensburg looked ready to play from the start as they jumped to a quick 8-0 lead after James Brack scored on a reverse and Luke Ballard ran in for the extra point. After shutting down Bucklin on their first possession Greensburg scored again as Ridge Estes took a quarterback sneak into the end-zone followed again by Ballard running in a successful extra point attempt. Bucklin was never able to move the ball against the tough defense from Greensburg and had to punt on all of their first half possessions.
Leading 16-0, Estes scored again on the opening possession of the 3rd quarter, but the extra point attempt failed, bringing the score to 22-0. With the team up three scores the coaching staff began the process of allowing some of the younger, smaller kids to gain some valuable experience. Bucklin was able to muster up a score late in the 3rd quarter, but Greensburg followed with a touchdown of their own bringing the score to 28-6 heading into the final quarter. Bucklin was able to score a late 4th quarter touchdown with 15-seconds remaining. The final score was Greensburg 28, Bucklin 14.
“Our kids were ready to play today and it showed from the first possession,” said Assistant Coach Todd Dean. “Our offense moved the ball with lots of success and our defense was stingy. These kids did a great job and had fun. I am so proud of the little guys who stepped up and played hard during the second half of the game. They learned a lot that will benefit them as the season progresses,”
The 3rd and 4th Grade Greensburg Rec. Football team will face Kinsley at 10 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 22 in Greensburg.
