Gladys Mae Schmidt, 93 a long time resident of Haviland, entered eternal life, July 21, 2012. Visitation will be held Friday, July 27, at Ayers-Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt, from 6-8 p.m. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haviland Cemetery, followed by a memorial service, at the Haviland Friends Church, at 3 p.m. She was born to Luther O. and Myrtle V. (Kinser) Card, on April 26, 1919, at home, 10 miles from Hugoton, and was to be their only child. She grew up attending the Bethal Friends Church with her parents and attended the Bethal Country School, for grades 1 - 8, often riding her pony to school.  The first two years of high school she attended Hugoton High School. At the start of her junior year, the family moved to Haviland where she attended Haviland Friends Academy. After graduation, she attended Friends Bible College, in Haviland, Alva State Teachers College, Alva, Okla., and Ft. Hays State College, Hays. Following college, she taught school for a number of years.On April 19,1948, she married Ira W. Chenoweth of Haviland, where they continued to make their home. Ira passed away in 1971. She was a member of the Haviland Friends church and was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Friends Bible College Ladies Auxiliary, helping with many of their projects including quilt making.  Gladys loved to cook, bake, sew and her flower gardens. Setting a perfect table was something she enjoyed and family dinners were always first class.  She was also an artist and florist, working many years at City Floral in Greensburg.

She married Frank Schmidt, on Aug. 17, 1980, and they also made their home in Haviland. Gladys enjoyed traveling and was able to visit much of the U.S.A. during her life time. She is survived by her daughter, Terri (Herald) Chenoweth Snyder and granddaughter Devin Snyder, all of La Habra, Calif.; two stepsons, Floyd (Gertha) Chenoweth, of Johnson, and Dean (Ella Fern) Chenoweth, of Haviland; two step-daughters, Florence (Ken) Craig, Valencia, Calif., and Evelyn (Allen) Brown, Monument, Colo.; 15 step-grandchildren, 18 step-great grandchildren, 10 step- great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husbands; two stepdaughters, Kitty Chenoweth Leffler and Audrey Chenoweth Ellis and a step-great-grandson, Mark Sterns. Memorials may be made to Barclay College, Haviland.
