Mullinville will host county 4th of July celebration

The Mullinville Recreation Commission will host an Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4, in downtown Mullinville. The annual events will be a countywide Fourth of July celebration with a number of children’s events, fireworks and the always-popular duck race.

“We’ve done this in Mullinville since the tornado,” said Cathy Sherer, a Mullinville resident who is helping the organizers. “Everybody enjoys a get-together.”

The evening’s events, which begin at 5:30 p.m. include bingo, a cakewalk, a marshmallow eating contest and “a bunch of races.”

Along with the egg races and sack races, the always-popular duck races will return for the 236-year independence anniversary celebration.

The duck race runs along main street sidewalks. The ducks will travel along the man-made waterway to the finish line, where a winning duck basks in the glory of a race well run. “We’ve done it for several years, people just seem to really enjoy it,” said Sherer.

There will also be a sandbox search, where children can sift through the sandbox for treasures like a bouncy ball, a ring or cold hard cash.

The Mullinville Fire Department will be manning the barbeque pit and the local Farm Bureau will make a lot of friends with their traditional ice cream selection.  

When asked what she was looking forward to, Sherer expressed what many county residents must be thinking after the recent week-long heat wave.

“I would really like it if it wasn’t 108 degrees,” she laughed.
