  • Mavericks Head Coach Clint Young led the West Division I team to the fourth shutout win in 8-Man All Star Game history.
“The game went great and the kids played well,” said Young. “We had three days to get things in a row and they did a really good job of picking things up.”
The 27th Annual 8-Man All-Star game was a week of statewide camaraderie and competition. Kiowa County football was represented by Young, Maverick QB Ross Binford and lineman Lymon Morehead.
Young, alongside former Haviland Dragons and current South Gray Head Coach Jeff Blatner, blew out the strong defensive East Division I team in a 36-0 drubbing.
“It was a great experience for me, I got to sit down with some great coaches,” said Young. “It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things.”
Both teams failed to score in the first quarter, but South Gray’s #1 Coulter Croft stepped into the end zone in a one-yard, second quarter TD to open the scoring. A 2-point conversion by Macksville’s #13 Seth Filbert finished the first half scoring.
The second half, still within reach for the East Division, opened with the West leading 8-0.
The West opened up second half scoring with Filbert connecting on a pair of touchdown bullets to Lincoln’s #44 Wyatt Schroeder on either side of a safety play.
Pretty Prairie’s Tanner Cooper halted a strong early fourth quarter drive by the East Division with a goal line interception, followed by a 74-yard touchdown beeline by #** Croft. Kiowa County’s #10 Ross Binford ran in a 3-yard TD in the final minutes of the fourth quarter cementing the 36-0 win for the West.
Kiowa County’s #65 Lymon Morehead only played a few downs, having injured his foot earlier in the week.
“When you get into those things, I guess everyone has their own philosophy,” added Young.  “We wanted a win but we wanted everyone to be able to contribute and have a good time.”
