  • A year ago there was a tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama which destroyed much of the community.  There was a family that took shelter in their basement and their dog was shut up in the garage.  When they emerged from the basement the only thing left was a small part of the front porch.  The garage was gone and the dog had been taken away.  Every day the family returned to the piece of porch looking for the family dog.  Every day they went away disappointed, until the end of the third week.  When they arrived at the property with just the porch left the dog was sitting on the porch.  The dog weighed half what it did when it disappeared, it had two broken legs but had managed to drag itself home and it was filthy.  But the family took the dog in and loved it just the same.  That dog knew where to go to be cared for and loved, if only he could find his way back.
Just as that family welcomed their dog home even though he didn’t look anything like he did before the storm, this is the way my God welcomes each of us home.  You see it doesn’t make any difference if we have things in order, if we are all cleaned up and our lives together, we can come back.  God does not leave anyone. We are the ones that choose to move away from God, but he will welcome us back.
Mary and I have an adopted son we hadn’t seen in about fourteen years. When he was young he had heard about Jesus, gone through confirmation and made a decision for Jesus, then went down the wrong path.  I shared the above story with him and told him that God is ready to take him back any time.  Saturday night Mary and I went on line and found a church with an early service a short driving distance from their home.  Our son went with us but his daughter was having a bad day and she and her mom stayed home.  Of all the topics in the Bible to talk about the pastor said almost the same thing we had already discussed with our son.  We walked out and Richard said “Wow! That’s just what you said.”  He was ready to go back the next week.  Will he?  I don’t know.  Will God welcome him when he does?  Yes, He will.  Will God welcome you?  Yes, He will.  And if you have never had a relationship with the Savior you don’t have to get things in order before you come to Him.  He is in the business of transformation.
We would welcome you to come and take part in worship and meet this King of Kings that welcomes all who come unto Him.  Remember He will never leave you.
