Kiowa County Public Health Department Administrator Mitzi Hesser, the organizer of the event, said the number of people who took advantage of the discount blood work matched numbers from last year’s fair.
“My numbers are almost exactly the same as they were last year,” said Hesser.” I do about 450-470 people every year, good numbers.”
The fair offered participants a variety of blood work for a discount charge.
For $20 the fair offered tests for liver, kidney and thyroid function, cholesterol levels, electrolytes, complete blood count and fasting blood sugar.
“[The fair] gives us the chance to do a wide variety of blood work and it’s very inexpensive and it’s something that the doctors really can’t do,” she added.
Hesser says that the services offered by the fair help patients as well as their doctors.
“If you were to go to the doctor, they can only draw a lab for specific problems,” she said. “Insurance really dictates what the doctor can do. The doctors really appreciate their patients coming and doing this because this way they can have a screening tool by which they can look at several different things to see if there are any problems.”
