Walk Kansas, 2012, is scheduled state wide for March 18-May 12, and local registration will begin February 15 - 24.
The popular Kansas State University Research and Extension fitness challenge is a team based program that promotes a healthier life style by being more active. Participants need not have prior experience with Walk Kansas to participate.
All are welcome. Walk Kansas encourages friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to form teams of six to walk the 423-mile distance from Kansas' east to west borders.
The goal is to encourage heart-healthy, aerobic activity and a healthy lifestyle.
While a team can accomplish what team members might never be able to accomplish alone, the personal challenge is to add 30 minutes of physical activity five or more days a week for a total of 150 minutes a week.
Participants in the program typically report multiple benefits from increased physical activity, including increased energy, a more positive outlook, stress reduction, improved sleep, weight loss and lower blood pressure.
Cost to enroll in the eight-week program is $8.00, and includes registration, weekly newsletters with food, nutrition, health tips and recipes. There will be a celebration of success with prizes for participants. That date will be announced later.
