James Kimmel Phillips II
Pratt - James Kimmel Phillips II, 79, of Pratt, Kansas, was surrounded by his family as he passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2021.
He was born in Colby, Kansas on December 15, 1941. He graduated from Colby High School and attended Fort Hays State University, studying Journalism. He was married to Judy Kaye Jones in May 1964, and they recently celebrated 57 years of marriage.
Jim spent his entire career in the newspaper business, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He started work at the Colby Free Press, then when he moved to Pratt, KS, he joined the staff at The Pratt Tribune. He spent much of his career as Publisher, and he was best known for his weekly articles under the name "Dry Creek" where he shared stories of his adventures hunting and fishing. Jim was a long-time member of Ducks Unlimited.
Jim is survived by his wife, Judy Phillips; his sister, JacKay O'Neill; his children, Jimmy Phillips, Alanea Endsley and Alicia Mowder; and his grandchildren Ellie Mowder and Rylee Endsley. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Kimmel Phillips and Eleanor Chittenden Phillips.
Jim wished to have his ashes spread at Loon Lake where he could rest while watching the fish jump and the ducks fly over. A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date. The family welcomes donations to the Pratt Area Humane Society as an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers.
