An Arkansas City man and a man and woman from Fergus Falls, Minn. have been identified as fatality victims of a two-vehicle accident in Kiowa County Nov. 14.

An Arkansas City man and a Fergus Falls, Minn. man and woman were killed in two-vehicle accident in eastern Kiowa County on Nov. 14.

A 2019 International semi, driven by 55-year-old Gary Allan Heald of Fergus Falls, was westbound on U.S. 54 at Wellsford when it crossed the center line and crashed into an eastbound 1995 Peterbilt driven by 38-year-old Justin Wise of Arkansas City, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The International came to a stop facing northwest and the Peterbilt came to a stop facing southeast. Both vehicles caught fire.

According to the Highway Patrol, Wise, Heald and Heald's passenger 56-year-old Cheryl Marie Thoma of Fergus Falls, Minn. were transported to Western Plains Hospital. It is unknown if any of the victims were wearing a seat belt.

Fire units from Kiowa County with assistance from a unit from Cullison put out the fires. The Peterbilt was pulling an empty cattle trailer and the International freight trailer was hauling a load of pork products.

The accident was reported at 6:52 a.m. on Nov. 14. Wellsford is located about a mile west of the Kiowa/Pratt County line on U.S. 54. The highway was closed and traffic rerouted for several hours while the accident scene was processed.
