The Lady Mavs volleyball team has five returning players in the starting rotation.
It could be another exciting year for Lady Mavs. Head coach Randy Fulton is expecting his Lady Mavericks to have another exciting season. Going into his 28th year at the helm, Fulton will be assisted by Kristi Heft and Stephanie White-Neuhold.
The Lady Mavs went 36-6 last year, were undefeated SPIAA champions, 2A Substate Champions and played at the State Tournament although they did not place. It was obviously a highly successful team.
Some key pieces off that squad have graduated of course, but 5 members of the starting rotation return although some will be asked to assume different roles this season.
Key returners for the Mavericks include: Alisyn Davis (12) rightside hitter; Sierra Lingenfelter (12) will move to setter from her defensive specialist role last year; Hannah Melton (11) played middle last year, but will move to the outside in 2017; Ashlin Oberle (12) becomes the libero after playing some hitter and some defensive specialist a season ago; Brecken VandenHoek (11) re- turns at outside hitter.
Filling in the gaps are a quartet of promising newcomers. Cambrey Ballard (11) will be a defensive specialist as will Alexas Cecil (12); Brooke Oberle (11) and Sabrina Thomas will both be middles.
“We obviously lost a lot of talent last year on a state tournament team,” Coach Fulton admitted. “However, I feel like if our girls who are changing roles can do what I think they can do, we could be very good.”
“Also, our returning starters who remain in same position gain another year of experience,” Fulton continued. “I am excited to see how far we can go.”
The 2017 volleyball season looks promising for the Lady Mavericks.
