The Kiowa County High School Mavericks played a close game against the Spearville Lancers, but were defeated 51-45 in their Jan. 6 home game.

The Mavericks were ahead after the first quarter 13-12 and at half time, the score was tied 23-23. They fell slightly behind in the second half.

"We didn't shoot free throws very well in the fourth quarter," Coach Zach White. "We didn't execute offensively as well as I think we should've. We missed a lot of shots around the bucket, a little more than usual. We got 3 points away from us and then they get a fast break and it kind of stayed that way."

White had plenty of praise for the Mavericks.

"Henry Cuevas and Taylor Odle stepped up and really played really good offensively," he said. "William Enfield rebounded phenomenally well on offense. As a group we played pretty good transition defense."

"It'll be fun if we see them again because it's going to be a battle," White said. "It's going to be a great game and I hope the kids have a chance to redeem this one."

Details about the Mavericks Jan. 10 game against Pawnee-Heights-Rozel were unavailable at press time.
