OBIT: Ronald LeRoy Woods, 74

Ronald LeRoy Woods, 74, of Hermitage, Mo., died at his home November 30, 2011. He was born October 23, 1937, the son of Willie R. and Melba N. (Martin) Woods, in a farmhouse northwest of Greensburg, Kansas. Ron graduated from Greensburg High School in 1955, and from Barton County Community College. He also graduated from the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course at the University of Louisville Kentucky. Ron was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1958 to 1961, stationed at Camp Long, Korea. After completing his military service, Ron returned to Greensburg and worked for the John Deere dealership and later the International Harvester dealership. In 1970 he was appointed to the Kansas Highway Patrol. He served in Russell, Larned, Liberal and Wamego. He retired in 1996 as a Lieutenant at the KHP Training Center in Salina, Kansas. Ron also served in the Kansas Air National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve from 1976 thru 1994, retiring as a Master Sergeant.  After his retirement he worked for the John Deere dealership in Salina, and as a volunteer Instructor and Zone Coordinator for AARP Driver Safety Program in Missouri. Ron was a member of the Hermitage Christian Church, a life member of VFW post 9638, Kansas Police Officers Association and the Kansas Sheriff’s Association. After the 2007 Greensburg tornado, Ron assisted with the compilation of relocation addresses, phone numbers and e-mails of Greensburg residents, past and present. On June 10, 1961, he married Esther "Kay" Klein in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They divorced in 1988. On June 30, 1990 he married Nora "Darlene" (Cole) Heier in Salina, Kansas. She preceded him in death July 21, 2008. Ron married Mildred Mae (Clovard) Morris of Fair Play, Missouri, August 22, 2009 in Hermitage, Missouri. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters Pam Olney and husband Mark, Winfield, Kansas, and Belinda Proctor, Manhattan, Kansas, one son William "Bill" Woods and wife Stephanie, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Grandchildren Travis Lindeman, Chad Olney, Scott Olney, Wesley Proctor, Katie Proctor, Laurel Woods and Andrew Woods, a brother Melvin Woods and wife Dorene, Topeka, Kansas, one sister Cathy Hayes and husband Bill, Loveland, Colorado, Mildred's son Wesley and her daughter Amanda and Darlene's three daughters, two sons and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services and celebration of Ron's life were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec 5, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Greensburg, with Rev. Jack Weston officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg. Visitation was held Sunday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association and the American Diabetes Association, both in care of Fleener Funeral Home, 514 S. Main St. Greensburg, Kansas, 67054.
