With spring and severe weather approaching, Pratt County Emergency Management Office in conjunction with the Cannonball Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross, City of Pratt Electric and Fire Department and Pratt County Health Department will host a Severe Weather Awareness seminar in Pratt.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 8 at the Pratt Community Center at 609 North Main. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting that will include information about hazardous weather safety, putting together family and business emergency plans and kits, heat related emergencies, fire safety and power outages. The program is expected to last an hour to an hour and a half.
Representatives from several agencies will be on hand to present information and answer questions, said Tim Branscom, Pratt County Emergency Manager.
Families need to take action before an emergency situation arises. They need to be prepared to take care of themselves because it may take a long time for help to arrive in the event of an emergency.
“Don’t wait until the last minute,” Branscom said. “Families should be prepared to be on their own for a while.”
The meeting will cover a wide variety of emergency and weather situations including hail, the No. 1 natural hazard in Pratt County.
Residents will hear emergency sirens at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9 as Pratt participates in a statewide tornado safety drill during Severe Weather Awareness Week March 8 to March 12.
From 1950 to 2009 Pratt County ranks ninth of 105 Kansas counties for tornadoes with 65 over that time period so weather safety is a concern for the county.
Any one with questions should contact the Pratt County Emergency Management Office at 672-4132 or the Red Cross office at 3651.
