Tiahrt Joins Legal Brief in Support of AZ Immigration Law
WASHINGTON— U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) today has joined with the American Center for Law and Justice, the Immigration Reform Caucus and Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in drafting a brief to file in defense of the Arizona immigration law in response to the misguided decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to file a lawsuit against the law last week. The brief will clearly explain why the Arizona law is firmly appropriate within the bounds of the Supremacy Clause and federal preemption precedent.
"The Arizona immigration law is constitutional and simply reinforces current federal law," said Tiahrt. "The Obama administration should not be wasting taxpayer dollars to send lawyers to Arizona when they should be sending more border patrol agents and the promised National Guard troops to protect our borders. There is a war raging on our border that needs immediate attention for our national and economic security-- and more attorneys is not the answer. I am pleased to join with the American Center for Law and Justice, the Immigration Reform Caucus and FAIR in drafting this brief in strong support of Arizona’s immigration law and their constitutional right to protect its border. I am confident the Obama administration lawsuit will not stand up in court and the Arizona law will prevail."
American Center for Law and Justice Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow said, "Instead of spending taxpayer funds to challenge Arizona's constitutional right to protect its borders and its citizens, the Obama Administration should secure Arizona's borders and the borders of other states."
Tiahrt has also joined with House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) in sending a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder condemning his decision to challenge the Arizona immigration law.
