Last weekend emergency crews and surveyors went into the Big Well for the first time in more than a year to take air quality readings, make some final measurements and inspect the well. With no circulation, the oxygen levels are dangerously low, which required additional crews from area fire departments to assist the local volunteer fire department.

This was the first step in preparations for construction at the proposed site on the east side of Sycamore St. in Greensburg. Following approval of the final plans from the City Council a few weeks ago, work has begun on the site of the soon-to-be Big Well Museum with an official ground breaking scheduled for Monday.

“We still a couple of weeks away from getting started, “ said Stacy Barnes, manager of the Big Well. “But last weekend was the initial, top-of-the-list beginning steps.”

Barnes talked about what it will feel like when the cement cap is taken off and visitors will be able to see into the “largest hand dug well in the world”.

“People will be able to see the whole width of the well. To be able to feel what that space is like, and to be able to go down inside of it, people will get a real appreciation for how much work went in to digging it. And what a truly amazing thing it is.”

The Big Well Museum and Gift Shop will hold its official ground breaking on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at 315 S. Sycamore St in Greensburg.
