Mona Lou Highberger, 83, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 30, 2011 at BSA Hospital, Amarillo, Texas.
She was born June 22, 1928 in Oklahoma City to Dewey and Ila Marie Lang Laycox. At a young age, she moved to Greensburg, Kansas where she attended and graduated from Greensburg Schools in 1946. She married Milton L. Highberger on November 14, 1952 in Ft. Riley, Kansas. Milton passed away June 26, 2007. The Highberger family lived in Greensburg until moving to Straight, Okla. in 1963. Mona worked at the Straight Schools as a cook for 11 years.
She was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was active in the choir. The Highbergers moved into Guymon in 1984 where Mona worked as the head cook for No Mans Land Senior Citizens Center.
In 2003, Mona attended art classes and Panhandle State University, Goodwell. She always enjoyed art and being around the art students.
She is survived by her children, Mike Highberger and wife, Julie of Sterling, CO; Jill Pollart and husband, Andy of Syracuse, KS; Patty Wanger and husband Rod of Stillwatrer, OK; Tim Highberger and wife, Edna or Hooker, OK and Joe Highberger and wife, Desiree’ of Enid, OK; ten grandchildren, Cade and Kyle Crawford, Justin, Alisha and Shayna Highberger, Hunter McEachern , Blake Highberger, Kelsey Pollart, Tabitha Tennant, Amber Highberger; and 21 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A Prayer Vigil was held on Monday evening, Oct.3rd at St. Peter’s the Apostle Church in Guymon. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, Oct. 4th at St. Peter’s with Father Mike Wheelahan officiating. Interment followed in Elmhurst Cemetery under the care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
