Brett Neelly, seventh grader at East Peoria Central Junior High in East Peoria, Ill, three the discus 145’4”, winning the state title and setting a new Illinois Elementary School Association state record. He also placed fourth in the shot.
This season Neelly has won all his seventh grade meets in shot and in discus and in all other meets except one, in which he was out thrown by his younger brother, sixth grader Adam. Adam has thrown 103’8”, which is further than his brothers threw when they were sixth graders.
The oldest Neelly boy, Chris, a junior at East Peoria High School, won the league title in the discus with a throw of 158’5”, which earned him first-team all-conference honors.
The boys’ father, Kurt Neelly, still hold the discus record of 166’7” at Greensburg High School, which will become part of Kiowa County High School when school opens next month. The boys are grandsons of Gene and Nancy Neelly of Pratt and Luetta and John Haynes of Liberal.
