A look at MaxPreps.com’s leader board reveals that through six weeks of the season Greensburg’s Nathan Charlton is the leading rusher in Kansas in Division I of eight-man football.  After last Friday’s win at St. John the senior back has now amassed 1,129 yards on 165 carries (48 of which came in the Jetmore game) for a yards-per-carry (ypc) average of 6.84.
Nipping at Charlton’s heels for the Division I rushing title for the 2009 season is Quinter’s Jordan Hagitt whose ypc of 8.08 comes as a result of 1,050 yards gained on 131 attempts.  From there the totals drop off, with third place held by Kyle Huddleston of Frankfurt sitting at 873 yards on 113 rushes for a ypc average of 7.73.
With the emergence of the Rangers’ quarterback Cody Headrick as a rushing complement to Charlton in the last two games on the strength of naked bootlegs catching the packed defenses of Jetmore and St. John for Charlton off guard, the junior transfer from Newton is 27th on the list with 464 yards on 62 carries for an impressive ypc of 7.48.
As for area competitors, Minneola’s Jason McClaren is currently in seventh with 778 yards on 103 totes for a 7.55 ypc average.
Several names on the list belong to upcoming district foes, starting with Macksville’s Marc Renfro in 14th position with 621 yards on 101 carries yielding a ypc of 6.15.  Three Spearville Lancers (this Friday’s opponent) are in positions 16 through 32, headed by Ryon King with 607 yards on 123 totes equaling a 4.91 ypc.  His teammate and quarterback Hunter Heiland (24th) has a 5.34 ypc stemming from 518 yards on 97 rushes, while 32nd is the Lancers’ Chad Barnett with a 6.4 ypc on the strength of 397 yards on 62 carries—all evidence of Spearville having made a dramatic shift from last year’s gun-it-down-the-field spread offense to a basic ground game this season under new coach Matt Fowler.
Skyline’s (Rangers’ opponent next week at Pratt) Trent Befort is in 23rd with 521 yards on 79 carries for a ypc average of 6.6.
