The Kiowa County Veterans Memorial, a three-year project for a number of local residents and business owners is finally beginning to take shape in the center of Mullinville on the north side of US. 400.
In October 2008 members of the community formed a board of directors to erect the memorial, which includes board president Don Fisher, Jackie Sherer, Doris Headrick, Donald Richards, Mike Case, Vera Cutright, Faye Hargadine, Paul Kendall, Jay Jones,
Mike Price and John Fleener.
With a generous donation of land from Mike and Marta Price and a $15,000 donation by the City of Mullinville construction began on the new county memorial, which will honor local men and women who served in the military.
Heft & Sons and Jay Jones did the lot preparations and Strate Construction of Kinsley is building the memorial, made from white marble, which now has flagpoles and concrete walls.
“We hope to have it finished by Veteran’s Day in November,” Fleener said. “We hope it will contain all of the names of Kiowa County residents past and present who have served in the armed forces.”
The memorial is being built to accommodate past names and future additions. Donations of $75 will be honored with 4” x 8” x 2” granite pavers with three lines of text. Only 500 pavers are available to the public and will enshrine the name of a loved one as part of the county memorial on the corner of Main St. Businesses, local residents and family members are welcome to donate and dedicate a granite paver even if they are not veterans.
With construction beginning and the official completion of the project only a couple of months away, board members like John Fleener are happy to see the project finally come to fruition and have found personal satisfaction in the years of hard work.
“It’s very important to me to be part of this. I served in the air force. This memorial will honor the people who served our country and protected our freedom’s ”
Donation forms are available at area banks or from individual board members.
