Why did you decided to become an educator?
I decided to become an educator during my 4 years of high school in Jetmore, Kansas. l was a teacher aide during summer school. I always "played school" with the neighbor children, too. :)
Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how?
I was inspired by my 7th grade social studies teacher Mr. Tacha. I liked the way he touched the lives of the students in my class.
Who is someone in current events who you admire and why?
I always admired Delmer Day, who was the principal when I was first hired to teach here. He had high standards, expected much from me as a teacher, had fun at his job. To teach is to touch not only children's lives but all the lives of the people around you. He most certainly did that!
What are the greatest challenges in education today?
Teaching children from various backgrounds and readiness skills.
What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into education?
You must love to be around children to be a teacher. It takes lots of patience and understanding.
What teaching moment is most memorable?
I have had many! However, generally speaking, I love to hear the children say positive comments about coming to school, and to see the look in their eyes when they accomplish a particular skill we are working on. It makes me feel so proud when a student that I have taught comes back to me after being in my class and thank me for my efforts to teach them.
