Name: Marshall Ballard

Position, subject you teach: High School English/Speech/Technology

School: Kiowa County High School

Hometown: Haviland

Education: Barclay College- Youth Ministry, Fort Hays State University- Education

Family: wife, Traci; kids, Nicole, Cambrey, and Luke

Interests and hobbies: My family, hunting, KU basketball, Barclay College basketball, my kids’ activities

In a few sentences, explain why you decided to become an educator.

I decided to be a teacher so I can be an influence on the students on a daily basis. I believe students need positive role models in their lives and teaching gives me that opportunity.

Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how?

Two people have had a major influence on my teaching career: Thad Roher, my 8th grade teacher and high school basketball coach, and Royce Bryan, former GHS teacher and current Barclay College coach and professor. These two men are examples of what it means to be a man of faith in the school and how important it is to build relationships with students.

What are the greatest challenges in education today?

Connecting with students on a personal basis and keeping up with the current trends in society and technology.

What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into education?

Relationships are more important than your lesson plans and any school program…in the end, students will remember how you treated them as a person more than they will any lesson you taught them.
