Earlier this month the Kiowa County Commissioners approved ordinance No. 2011-14 which institutes a $35 fee for “all loads brought to the Kiowa County Landfill which contain loose, unsecured trash.”
The ordinance was passed in response to apparent costs incurred by the county to clean up garbage and trash littering county roadways and safety concerns.
Kiowa County Landfill Manager Eric Peters said they have not begun administering the fine but have handed out flyers to landfill users in preparation for the Oct. 3 instituting of the ordinance. Peters said they wouldn’t be “sticklers” about the ordinance and that trucks should be “reasonably secured” to avoid the fine. He also said they would not refuse trucks that are unsecured like other area landfills because of concerns over roadside dumping.
Your opinion matters:
“I think that’s a fair price. I know they have a similar fine in Pratt. People should cover what they haul out there. I think that is a fair price.” - Roger Harris, Greensburg
“There shouldn’t be any special treatment for anyone and what constitutes ‘tied down’? Larned has a similar fee, I think it’s $35. In Larned, if your trash isn’t tied down you’re either fined or they won’t take it.” - JR Beltz, Centerview, KS
