In a few sentences, explain why you decided to become an educator.

I remember playing school with my little sister when I was very young. I was the teacher of course.  I never thought about being in any other profession.

Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how?

I had many, many good teachers along the way at all levels of education.  I have especially  fond memories of my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Couch, because she read interesting books to us after lunch and taught us a special Spanish class in a different room.  (We were a 5th and 6th grade contained classroom.)

What are the greatest challenges in education today?

Technology is changing so rapidly.  At a recent conference we viewed a YouTube video that summarized the rate of change throughout history.  Never before, has change occurred so rapidly.  We have to teach our students how to learn while still teaching them basic skills at the elementary level.

What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into education?

You must enjoy working with children and have an abundance of patience.  Other qualities to have include a strong work ethic, creativity, flexibility, the ability to work with other adults in a busy environment while also spending a lot of time working alone.  Many careers pay more, but  you, along with parents, will be preparing children to be in those careers!   If is also important to be the kind of person that can delay immediate gratification.  The fruits of you labors may not be seen for many years.

What  teaching moment is most memorable?

Since I teach reading over a span of grades, it is always thrilling to see children who struggle to learn to read take off and acquire a love of reading.
