Day by day, gift by gift, Kiowa County United (KCU) draws ever closer to full funding for the strip mall now being erected on Greensburg’s South Main Street, across the street from the Business Incubator.
“Right around $265,000,” was Scott Brown’s response when asked Thursday morning how much short of the full amount KCU finds itself. The organizer and spokesman for KCU, made the comment shortly after receiving a check for $45,000 from Rotary International toward the project, Rotary having become a KCU member by giving the minimal $5,000 gift last winter.
Local Rotary secretary Greg Waters explained the group’s latest donation was an accumulation of givings from Rotarians from around the world, but primarily within the U.S.
“Rotarians wanted to give toward the rebuilding of Greensburg and those of us here directed them toward this project because it will do a lot for our downtown and bringing businesses back here,” Waters said.
“Now that people can see that it’s becoming a reality they may be more willing to chip in,” he said. “And once they see the façade go up and the streetscape get done, they’ll likely be even more prone to help us.”
Of the 75 or so KCU members—individuals or groups who’ve donated at least $5,000 toward the project—who’ve already helped pushed the total raised to $1.15 million, Brown hopes “more than a few” would be willing to “give again, though maybe not another $5,000. Even if they came back with another $1,000 it would be a big help.”
He also said he’d likely solicit local contractors working in town on this and other projects to give toward the mall’s completion.
