Two out of state men escaped injury when they failed to yield to a train and it struck the trailer of their semi, knocking the truck on its side.
Two out of state men escaped injury when they failed to yield to a train while driving a semi and trailer at 8:31 a.m. on April 11 in Kiowa County. The accident occurred at U.S. 54 and 11th Avenue about 150 feet north of the highway.
Elijah Edwards, 27 of Tifton, Georgia was driving a southbound 2017 Kenworth semi and trailer when he failed to yield to an eastbound Union Pacific train at the crossing at U.S. 54 and 11th Avenue, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol on-line crash log web site.
The train struck the trailer and the semi overturned. Edwards and his passenger Enoc Luis, 21 of Brooksville, Fla. who was in the sleeper unit of the truck cab were not injured. Edwards was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The engineer of the train, Anthony Holmes, 41 of Amarillo, Texas and 62 year-old Byron Shafer of Valley View, Texas were not wearing seat belts but neither was injured.
