The Kiowa County High School Maverick boys defeated Satanta 67-55 last Friday, Feb. 3 in a home game.
"Frank and Henry Cuevas played like they were sophomores again," Coach Zach White said. "They have both been very good for us in league play this season, but they both had off games in terms of handling the ball. When they combine to have 13 turnovers in one game we are going to struggle a little bit. Satanta's pressure was good but me made a few too many silly turnovers that were self-inflicted."
The Mavericks came back from being slightly behind 17-16 in the first quarter. Frank Cuevas scored two two-point shots. He made one free throw, the first of eight he would score that night. Cuevas scored the most free throws of anyone in the game.
Taylor Odle and Nicholas Sears each scored two twos. Henry Cuevas scored a two and a free throw.
The Mavericks also had a tight second quarter, scoring 12 points and getting ahead 28-26 at half time.
Odle scored a three. Frank Cuevas scored a two and a free throw. Sears scored two twos and Cale Thompson scored two free throws.
In the third quarter, Odle and Frank Cuevas each scored six points – Odle with two threes and Frank Cuevas with three twos. Henry Cuevas scored three points with a two and two free throws. Thompson scored two free throws and William Enfield scored a two.
It was the Mavericks' highest scoring quarter with 20 points, putting the score at 48-38 at the end of the third quarter.
Frank Cuevas had his highest scoring quarter in the final eight minutes, putting 10 points on the board in the fourth quarter – six free throws and two twos. Sears and Thompson each scored two free throws. Henry Cuevas scored two points and Odle scored a free throw.
White praised Odle and Sears with shooting the all well.
"We had five guys who had five or more rebounds and Frank had eight assists," White said. "Frank did a good job of creating open shots and finding the open man."
