BELVIDERE – A large grassfire started in Comanche County and spread into Kiowa County around six miles west of Belvidere Tuesday afternoon.

The call came in at 2:54 p.m. and the Comanche County Fire Dept. was on the scene at 3:06 p.m., said Greg Ellis, Comanche County Fire Chief. Around 50 firefighters battled the flames. All fire crews from Kiowa and Comanche County as well as several from Barber County and Cullison in Pratt County were at the scene.

It took firefighters around one-and-a-half to two hours to get the fire contained. There were no injuries and there was never any danger to structures, Ellis said.

At this time, firefighters do not know how the fire started. Ellis said he did not know how many acres burned, but guessed roughly 200 or 300 acres were affected.

The land on the Comanche County side has an out of state owner. Ed Koger owns the land on the Kiowa County side.
