Greensburg Post Office to commemorate 4th anniversary
of rebuilding Greensburg with a special postmark and green stamps
GREENSBURG, KS – The Greensburg Post Office will commemorate the 4th anniversary of rebuilding Greensburg, by offering a special postmark and some Go Green forever stamps. An EF5 tornado destroyed the city the night of May 4, 2007. Greensburg boasts the largest number of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum buildings, per capita, in the U.S.
The special postmark will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Wednesday, May 4 at the 5-4-7 Arts Center, located at 204 W. Wisconsin Ave. The Arts Center was the first LEED Platinum project in Kansas. Booths and displays by Greensburg Greentown and the Arts Center will provide information on the destruction and rebuilding of Greensburg. The postmark is free and can be applied to virtually anything with First-Class postage affixed. The postmark features a partial wall of bricks and the words “Rebuilding Green for Future Generations, 5-4-7 Anniversary Station.”
The new Go Green forever postage stamps, featuring 16 easy ways to conserve our planet’s resources, will be available at the event, and should prove popular to use with the special postmark. Activities highlighted on the stamps include riding a bike, composting, adjusting the thermostat, using clotheslines, and choosing to walk. Related items such as tote bags, note cards, stamp sheets with the official Digital Color Postmark, and stamped postcards and envelopes bearing the Go Green stamp images, will also be available for sale.
Postmaster Randall Kelley says the postmark makes for an inexpensive souvenir of the city’s green rebuilding efforts, and encourages everyone to come down and get their Go Green stamps, special postmark, and enjoy the displays.
The Postal Service is the only mailing and shipping company in the world whose shipping supplies are cradle-to-cradle certified, meeting established standards for human and environmental health and recyclability. Since 2003, the Postal Service has reduced its energy use 24 percent. Learn more about USPS sustainability initiatives at usps.com/green.
The special postmark is also available through the mail for 30 days following the event. Customers should affix first-class postage to postcards or envelopes of their choice, address the postcards/envelopes (to themselves or others), and place them in a larger envelope addressed to the following address: Greensburg Postmark, 139 N. Main St., Greensburg, KS 67054-9998.
After applying the postmark, the envelopes will be returned through the mail. Requests must be postmarked no later than June 3, 2011. To purchase Go Green stamps and philatelic, licensed and retail products, visit usps.com/green.
