I Have A Gushy Love Story To Tell

By dhinshaw
Once upon a time…
I met a girl named Rhonda, and I fell in love.
I ran after her with my love, and pursued her with everything I had.
I pursued her with more of my love, and even then, more.
I pursued her until I felt I had captured her heart.
So, I asked her to marry me, and she said no.
I can hear empathy echoing, “Oh, wow, that’s terrible. Poor little broken hearted fella.”
I was relentless in my pursuit of my love for her, and gently yet firmly pressed, pushed, and loved until I heard the only word I longed to hear, “yes”.
You were getting nervous huh?  It’s ok.  She said yes!
This is the story of God:  He presses, pursues, hounds, and loves us with this kind of relentless passion, and you, have perhaps not said yes.  And even if you reject His love, He pursues and chases you ever still.  It was not enough for Him to send a priest, a prophet, an angel, or any other, for in the context of love, you must go yourself.  And so God has come.
This is the story of Jesus, that God has walked this earth.  He has tread on the soil of this earth and breathed our air.  He has loved through healing the broken.  He has loved through touching the untouchable.  He has loved through teaching the doubters, and activating their true identity.  He loved until He was rejected, despised, and unrecognizable, yet undeterred in His pursuit.  He is here, even now, still pursuing you with His love.  So, keep reading.
There is something transcendent in this type of love.  This is the type of love we go to the movies in order to find its truth.  This is the love that attracts us to open a novel to discover its beauty.  All too often it can be found in the fictional fables, but is hard to find in the reality of every day life.  Every human being longs for this type of sacrificial unrelenting love.  Then, add to that the fact that God is love, is an almost overwhelming prospect to our human intellect.
When God is described within the life of Jesus, we find it’s not about who is right and who is wrong in the things that don’t matter outside of eternity, but rather what God’s name means in regards to me.  What is God’s motivation to love me?  What is God’s motivation to love you?  If the message that God wanted to get across was to simply fill in the blanks of the hard questions then He didn’t need to come Himself.  If God’s desire was to clarify the theological points that divide us, he would have left it up to religion.  No personal visitation would be necessary if a prophet or teacher of the law could do the work.  If the ultimate end was simply to overwhelm us with the miraculous so that we would finally believe, then even God taking on flesh and blood and walking among us was far from necessary.  There are plenty of acts of His power before Jesus came.
There is only one reason for God to come Himself, because in issues of love, you just can’t have someone else stand in for you.  When it comes to love, face to face is the only option.  There has to be contact.  There has to be a pursuit, so Jesus becomes His pursuit.
Love pursues it’s end even in the darkest of alley ways of your soul.
Love pursues even when rejection seems like the only response.
Love pursues in spite of failures.
Love runs hard, chases rigorously and never quits.
The one He (Love) pursues is you and me and every human who has ever walked this planet through the life and activity of Jesus.
Religions teach that God is reluctant to even talk about loving you until you have met his standards.  This is lunacy.  Love exists because He, God, is Love, and will do anything to pursue a relationship, face to face with Him.
God came in the life of Jesus, to meet us right where we are.
I once met Jesus and found God, therefore I found love.
The end.
Now write your story.
And the Word (God) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.  “If you have seen Me (Jesus) you have seen the Father.”
John 1:14; 14:9

You Say…

By dhinshaw

Image

I remember that as a boy I feared the dark.  Scratch that, I fear the dark, and remember it, yet as a young boy I had this theory that I was fast enough physically to flip the light switch and get into my bed before the light turned to darkness.  Did you ever do that?  If you didn’t, then search for something with a little more substance and intelligence to read, but if you’re still reading, then you are a dreamer like me and realize there is more to life than than just reality.

As a child I would inherently think that if I dreamed of the impossible enough I could convince myself it was achievable.  That’s how I believed I could reach my pee-stained mattress before the light dissipated into darkness at the age of five.  I dreamed it enough, that I actually could see what was impossible.  I had other impossible dreams too.  I could sit on a gas meter on the side of my house and believe it was a 1976 Kawasaki Enduro.  I could hit rocks with a broomstick into the fields of Kansas and believe I was in Royals stadium and the name on the back of my jersey read, “Brett”.  I believed the cushion on the couch in our basement was Muhammed Ali and I was Sugar Ray Leonard; my intelligence in the ring, foot speed on the shag carpet, and lightning quick hands were too much for cushion, I mean Ali.

Without any proof, we believe in who we can become, right?  Maybe that’s just reserved for five year olds with unusual confidence.  At five we can assume the future and somehow make it present, then comes age 6, then 7, 10, 15, 30…and the ability to dream in the invisible begins to dissipate like the light and leave us in danger of settling for the mundane and average.

Why are we most alive when we are pursuing a great dream?

Why is it that we need a reason to live?

Why do we need to feel that we are in some way unique?

Why is it when we conclude that our lives don’t matter, we lose something inside of us that moves us?

As a boy I was confident in my identity. I was Donald Eugene Hinshaw, and although I didn’t really like my middle name, I was comfortable with it because it was the name my parents, who loved me, gave to me.  I was confident because my parents told me frequently how much they loved me and were proud of me.  If trouble came my way, their comfort eased it.  If I was hungry, my mom fed me.  If I was creative, they encouraged it.  If I was lost, they searched for me.

I had no fears, no real struggles that couldn’t be met by their care and affection.  My confidence was stout, because their love was steadfast.  I knew who I was. My identity was secure in their love and care.  I therefore had space to dream and believe in greater things.

In Mark chapter 8 Jesus was on a journey with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and while they were traveling they had a conversation about the identity of Jesus and who He was.  This was critical to the purpose of humanity then, and is just as critical to you today.

He (Jesus) asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”  And they told him, John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”  And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?”  (Mark 8:27-29)

The question Jesus was asking them is the same question you and I must ask ourselves if we are to find true confidence in our existence.  This is the question required of every generation, and every generation must answer it for itself.  The first question Jesus asks, ”Who do people say that I am?” only sets up the all important question, ”Who do you say that I am?”  The strategic “you say”  in the question is incredibly contextual to your life, identity and hope.  Each new generation, in every culture, is given a “you say.” And if we get our “you say” wrong, we get everything wrong, since Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end of all things.

When you know who Jesus is, and have given your life to Him, His Spirit is alive within you; your confidence in who you are and who you will be, are rooted in the deep thread of Jesus’ life.  It’s then, that you can dream of  creating, accomplishing, and becoming the person God designed you to be.

In three weeks we will start a new theme for spring and summer called the “Red Letter Spring and Summer” series.  In this study we will discover who Jesus said He is in His seven “I Am” statements we find in scripture, as well as who He said we can be in the “Beattitudes.”   Join us at HFC starting Sunday, May 13th for our “Red Letter Spring and Summer” series and discover through Christ’s words who you were intended to be and who you can become.

Let the Sifting Begin

By dhinshaw

I don’t “ask for it” often.  I mean, I don’t “ask for it” like my mother would often suggest as a threat to my misbehavior.

“Donnie!  Young man, you are really asking for it aren’t you?”

Did she really want me to answer that question?  My mother was a master at getting her point across with a question that only had one logical answer; she had brilliance in mystical verbal correction.

Do you see what I am getting at?  We don’t ask for trial, or a cruising for a bruising type of life, yet it seems to come so natural to our existence.  I somehow allow it, as if it leads me to something deeper.  Sometimes it even seems like God is ok with a measure of my personal suffering in life.  I was reading a passage from Luke 22, and it reminded me of the fact that God is most glorified in us through our weakness.

[9] But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV)

In Luke 22 just following the debate of the disciples selfish concern of who is the greatest, Jesus speaks directly to Simon Peter to prove a point to all the disciples, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32 ESV)

Jesus essentially says to all of them in this moment, “Listen to me!  Satan wants you.  He wants to have you, so that he can rake you over the coals, beat you down, ridicule you, test you, and drive you to break.  He wants to bend you, but don’t worry I won’t let you break! I’ve got this, just trust me.  I am praying for you, that the faith, which I gave you, through grace, which I also gave you, WILL NOT FAIL, and when you stand up out of the rubble, you will stand with a deeper understanding of faith, a richer sense of grace, in which you will teach others, lead others, and become all I want you to become.”

“So for now, Donnie, I am going to allow you to be sifted like wheat so that I can reveal the strength of your life, which is grace and faith.  Then, you will lead.”

I don’t “ask for it” often, but maybe I should.  I want the type of faith that I can confidently say to Him, ”Let the sifting begin!”

Today, Lord, I allow you to have your will with me, sift me that I might know you more.Image

Dear Haviland Friends, What would a person do without friends and neighbors in our small town? Your many expressions of reports of prayers, your cards and phone calls during my hospital stay have been very meaningful to us. Although I am home now, I am very much home-bound until I get stronger. God bless you all and may His grace abound in your lives. With love, Esther Johnson

What If’s and the Power of Prayer

By dhinshaw

[21] “And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from this time forth and forevermore.”

(Isaiah 59:21 ESV)

For the first time in my life I am afraid for our students.

I’ve never been fearful of anything involving student ministry, because I was always leading it.

I heard all the “what if”s”.

What if you play dodgeball and someone gets hit?  My answer, “They should have dodged.”

What if you play can-can and someone gets their arm pulled out of socket?  My answer, “We will teach our kids about the power of prayer and healing.”

What if people think our kids are too radical in their faith? My answer, ”become radical too and they won’t surprise you.”

What if you lose sight of a junior higher on the slopes while skiing?  My answer, “We will need the extra room!”  (that’s a joke, I didn’t say that, at least not often.)

What if our kids get in trouble for sharing their faith? My answer, “Their reward is in heaven.”

What if it’s too dangerous to go there on a missions trip?  My answer, “Faith”

What if…

What if…

I will be honest with you, at times I got tired of hearing the “what if’s”.  I felt I was connected with the fact that things could go wrong.  I felt I had a handle on teens, I had a couple of them.  I was in touch with the reality of their culture and it’s inherent dangers, their fears,  and even their greatest abilities and impact on the Kingdom of God.

I felt like I had a handle on their life, because I controlled what happened at youth group.  I controlled what was going on, what they were exposed to and where they were going.  I calculated the risks, I prayed with great passion and power, therefore, I was confident.  I wanted them to see that confidence in me.

That was when I was a youth pastor.  Now, I am a pastor who is not going on the trip and life couldn’t be more different.

Today, knowing my precious daughter Lillian is going on a missions trip to Mexico, I have a different perspective, a perspective of “what if”.  My faith is now having to take over.  My faith is now needing to move beyond the “what if’s” that parents have been giving me for years.  My faith in Him is all I have.

That last statement.  My faith in Him is all I have.

Why do we say that like it’s the backup plan?

Why do we say that like it’s our last resort?

My faith in Him is all I have ever had.  He has proven Himself to me over and over that He comes through.  He has proven Himself in scripture and in life. And through scripture and life, he has taught me in stories that were long and short stories, years and minutes, pain and triumph, joys and sorrows, and ups and downs.  The point is, He is there, always.  The point is He has proven Himself to be trustworthy and faithful to His children.

So, tomorrow my daughter goes on a youth mission trip, with your daughters and sons, your children and grandchildren, and my responsibility to them is to give them everything I have.  My “what if’s” become prayers of confidence and security in Him, knowing He truly is all I have, and He is all my daughter has too.

I’m not afraid for our students, because I know my God will come shining through my “what if’s”.

Pray for our youth missionaries that out of their mouth’s will come the very Spirit of God, His love and compassion, His power and protection, His hope and security.  This is God’s covenant with us, therefore, this is His covenant with our children!  Trust His promise and pray like you know it’s true!

Do not limit what God can do through our children and their missional hearts!  I can’t wait to hear the impact they will make through Him and your prayers.

Love you all!

Pastor Donnie

ps.

tomorrow 5:15 am. in the church parking lot, come and support our student missionaries and their journey of faith to bring God’s love and power to the lost.
