  • On August 9, 1944 one of America’s most beloved wildfire prevention icons was born when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council decided to create a fictional bear to promote their forest fire prevention efforts. Their team effort produced Smokey Bear who has been depicted in print and video over the past 70 years reminding us all that most forest fires are caused by human carelessness with his famous advice that “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.”
This Labor Day Weekend, Fort Larned National Historic Site and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge have teamed up to celebrate Smokey’s 70th birthday. Prints depicting Smokey Bear from past ad campaigns on loan from Quivera National Wildlife Refuge will be on display in the Fort Larned Visitor Center all of Labor Day Weekend. On Sunday, August 31st the Larned Fire Department will have fire equipment on display at the fort from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. They will also be handing out free Smokey memoriabelia. We’ll have a birthday cake for Smokey and card to sign. There is even a rumor that Smokey Bear himself may make an appearance!
