July 29, 1588: English naval forces under the command of Sir Francis Drake defeat the Spanish Armada at the Battle of Gravelines.
Number to Know
130: Number of ships in the Spanish Armada of 1588. The fleet was intended to escort an army to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. Only five of these ships were lost at the Battle of Gravelines, but the entire armada was thrown into disarray by the defeat, eventually losing many more ships to severe storms in the North Atlantic. More than a third of the ships were eventually lost.
