  • 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND at FORT LARNED

The staff of Fort Larned National Historic Site cordially invites the public to a new and exciting weekend of celebration on Friday, July 4 – Sunday July 6. This 4th of July weekend will have special emphasis on kid’s activities with plenty of souvenirs to take home while focusing on the life of Fort Larned as a military fort. The event hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Plan to bring a picnic lunch and stay all day.
Mothers and fathers, its Harvest Time and the kids will reap in the fun from seed art to picking peas. They will make some mint ice cream the old fashioned way, hear all about the Bunny Raid, and make sweet- smelling herb bouquets. Assist in the hospital as a medical attendant and dress up like a soldier in the barracks. Want to pound a hammer like the blacksmith? We’ll help you make a wildflower print just by using a hammer. Your finished art piece will go home with you!
Examine objects from the Plains Indian culture and try your hand at painting meaningful symbols on bark. The event gives kids and their families the opportunity to uniquely explore Fort Larned and learn about life at the Fort in the late 1860s. Kids who participate in the activities will earn a Junior Ranger badge and be sworn in as official Fort Larned National Historic Site Junior Rangers. Adults accompanying their children will enjoy participating in this interesting adventure.
There is no charge to visit Fort Larned. The Visitor’s Center is also the site for cold drinks, restrooms, the museum, bookstore, and a short video about Fort Larned. Photographs taken by the fort’s youth photographers will be shown in the Visitor Center – a new display to see for our returning visitors!
