    June 16, 1816: Lord Byron reads “Fantasmagoriana,” a collection of ghost stories, to his four house guests, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Claire Clairmont and John Polidori, and challenges them all to write their own horror tale. From that challenge came Mary Shelley writing the novel “Frankenstein,” John Polidori writing the short story “The Vampyre” and Byron writing the poem “Darkness.”
