  • Kent Bush: What will 2014 hold?

  • Usually the New Year brings more forward-looking sentiment with resolutions and plans for great things on the horizon.
But this year I find myself looking back at 2013. It was an interesting year.
I would love to call it a good year. In many ways it was.
But I guess maybe the past couple of years were a little too good for 2013 to live up to them.
In 2011, I spent two weeks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia adopting a little boy. That’s hard to top.
But I tried to top it in 2012. I ran for President as a write-in candidate in Kansas.
That was really fun and interesting. I spent about three months campaigning against the Electoral College and how it places more value on the votes of people in swing states and small states while voters in states with higher population and one-party states are worth less.
So without a new child and a presidential campaign, 2013 felt a little dull.
But it wasn’t like there weren’t some exciting times. The Augusta Daily Gazette actually won the Sweepstakes award in our circulation division.
But by the end of the year, we were combining all three of our small newspapers in Butler County into one bigger product that has already seen almost 200 new subscribers added.
I guess the Gazette went out on a high note as the best newspaper in its division and the Times-Gazette has come in with exciting new circulation growth.
Both of those are great professionally, but neither really means as much personally as adopting a child or trying to become President.
So what will 2014 hold for me? Will I work less? Not if the past is any indicator.
Will I lose a bunch of weight, learn to ride a bike or maybe stop drinking Diet Coke?
    I doubt it.
I made those resolutions for years and apparently the fact that I really don’t want to ride a bike, I do like drinking Diet Coke and I enjoy candy and ice cream more than being skinny have a lot to do with me never keeping them.
So I have a very nebulous resolution for 2014.
I’m going to make it exciting. I’m going to do something I’ve never done because I have never done it.
I don’t know what 2014 will bring my way. But my eyes will be ever open looking for that opportunity that will come around that has never come my way before – and may never come again.
Page 2 of 2 - In 2014, I resolve to take chances like I did when we decided to adopt or when the crazy idea to become a write-in candidate for president was first the punchline of a sarcastic joke.
Mark Twain once said, “I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one.”
I want to live 2014 more like Benjamin Disraeli who said, “One secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.”
This year, I’m going to look for those opportunities and be ready.
