  • Every second of every day is recorded on video but no one can remember what happened last year.
Everyone is so busy chasing the hot new thing they fail to recognize the recycled nature of almost every hot new fad.
It was true when Solomon said it in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes and it is just as true now, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
I love the outrage over Miley Cyrus’ Angry Birds themed music video for her song “Wrecking Ball” that became the No. 2 viewed video on Youtube this year.
She licks a sledgehammer and rides naked on a wrecking ball while smashing down walls. What angst. What symbolism. How shocking.
Now cur the outrage machine and watch every teenage girl rush to watch it a billion times just to get a primer on how to shock their parents.
And the sad thing is, their parents will be shocked.
They will be shocked because it wasn’t like that when we were teenagers. Right. It was like that when your parents were teenagers.
Do people really just remember those cute British boys the Beatles as the “I Want to Hold Your Hand” Beatles. No one remembers, “Why Don’t We Do it In the Road” from the White Album or “I’m So Tired” about drug rehab? Do we not remember Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band? Come on, John Lennon and Yoko Ono had love ins where they would lie naked in public.
And Miley Cyrus transitioning from Disney kid to Wrecking Ball shocks you?
The Beatles were doing it 40 years ago.
When I was in high school in the late 1980s Two Live Crew was rapping songs from which I can’t even reference the titles or any of the lyrics. They had women doing things on stage that were neither angst ridden nor symbolic, but they were shocking.
Seriously, even kids television’s Saved by the Bell produced Elizabeth Berkley who played Jessie Spano – most famous for bad dancing and completely tripping out on caffeine pills - who went on to show more skin than a leather store later in her career.
You have to understand, the career arc is not conducive to longevity. Consumers’ tastes change. The cute kid star grows up. They need a new hook.
Some leave the scene entirely and disappear into suburbia. Some can’t handle leaving the warmth of the limelight and they are forced to go big or get ignored.
Page 2 of 2 - If history is a teacher, Cyrus will settle down and become family minded before reinventing herself as a serious actress or mature singer songwriter again in about five years.
    Life is about seasons.
It’s cold right now and there are presents stacked high under the Christmas Tree. That makes sense now, but those presents won’t be there in July and you certainly won’t need that scarf to keep your neck warm.
Try to keep your perspective when those we task with entertaining us try to find a way to capture your imagination.
