The Leavenworth Board of Education took up the following issues Wednesday:
      • The board decided not to purchase new desks to be used by board members during meetings. The furniture would have cost $6,603.
      • The board approved a staffing report. The report lists various personnel changes including the resignation of Henry Leavenworth Elementary Principal Stacy Graff. His resignation will be effective June 6.
      • Board members discussed goals and objectives for the current school year.
      • The board honored Leavenworth High School teacher Jeff Baxter, who recently was named the Kansas Teacher of the Year.
  • The superintendent of Leavenworth public schools has resigned.
The Leavenworth Board of Education accepted Kelly Crane's resignation during a special meeting Wednesday night.
"Dr. (Bret) Church will be our interim superintendent," board President Nancy Klemp said.
Church had been serving as assistant superintendent.
Crane was not in attendance Wednesday, but board members approved a resolution stating they received the superintendent's resignation earlier in the day.
Klemp said the resignation gave no reason why the superintendent quit her position with the school district.
The resolution, which was read by board member Doug Darling, stated the board accepted the terms of the Crane's resignation.
After the meeting, officials would not elaborate on the terms.
"That's all we can say at this point," said Robert Hingula, attorney for the school board.
Klemp said board members will decide during a Dec. 18 meeting whether Church will be asked to continue to serve as interim superintendent for the rest of the school year.
"We have to have a superintendent," she said.
Klemp said Church basically has been serving as interim superintendent. The board president acknowledged Crane had not been at the district's central office but did comment on why or for how long.
Crane did not attend a Nov. 20 school board meeting. And she was said to be unavailable to make a quarterly report to the Leavenworth City Commission Tuesday night.
Crane had been superintendent of the Leavenworth school district since 2008. Before that, she served two years as an assistant superintendent.
During her tenure as superintendent, Crane was arrested in 2009 in Parkville, Mo., for driving under the influence of alcohol. She pleaded guilty to the charge and was placed on probation. She apologized for her actions.
Before approving the resolution Wednesday night, board members met behind closed doors in executive session for more than 30 minutes for the purpose of consulting with an attorney.
The resolution to accept Crane's resignation was approved 6-0. Board Vice President Marti Crow was absent.
