Consuming daily fruits and vegetables is healthy.
This summer I have been assisting with the Summer Lunch Program in our community. Each week volunteers gather to pack grocery bags full of snacks and easy-to-prepare lunch items. The bags are then delivered to families who have signed up for assistance. The program in an invaluable part of our community as children don't have access to school breakfast and lunch programs during the summer months.
Recently a volunteer returned from delivering bags with tears in her eyes. She explained two children had emerged from the last house on her delivery route. The brother and sister eagerly ran to the car to greet her, anxious to see what the week's bag included. The little girl looked inside the bag and upon seeing an apple shouted, "Yes, fruit!"
I am grateful my mother provided fruits and vegetables on a daily basis during my childhood. I can't imagine not including these items in my routine diet. Sadly processed and pre-packaged foods now dominate our food chain. The transition is costly, both from a financial perspective and from a health perspective. I firmly believe "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" and encourage our society to indulge in the benefits nature has to offer.
