The Dodge City Red Demons and the Kiowa County Mavericks track squads competed Friday at the Shocker Pre-State Meet at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium.

The meet was broken down into three divisions: elite (those considered in the top 10 no matter their classification), 4A-6A and 1A-3A.

Bryce Sonday claimed Dodge City's only win in the elite division of events, winning the discus title with a throw of 167-8.

Kiowa County's Heather Melton also claimed a first place in the elite division, winning the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-1 3/4. Melton also finished third in the 100 hurdles at 15.47, just behind Dodge City's Summer Wilson (15.44).

Oscar Carmona placed second in the boys elite 1,600 in a time of (4:34.81), while two relay teams finished third in their elite division events: the boys 4x800 relay team (8:21.86) and the girls 4x100 relay squad (52.26).

A couple of Demon tracksters recorded top three finishes in the Class 4A-6A section of the meet: Elder Colindres finished third in the boys 1,600 (4:39.23) and Chandra Sain was third in the girls pole vault (7-6 1/2).

The Mavericks claimed four boys individual events in the Class 1A-3A event. Damien Odle won in the javelin (164-2) and the high jump (5-10), while the 4x100 (46.01) and the 4x800 (9:05.86) also won their relay races.

Three Mavericks finished second in their events: Caleb Davis (1,600, 4:56.71), Cody McVey (800, 2:10.82) and David Perez (pole vault 11-6).

Three Lady Mavericks finished in the top three of their Class 1A-3A events: Katelynn Gamble was second in the 200 (28.22) and third in the pole vault (8-0 1/2), Erica Bertram was second in the 400 (1:03.02), and Riann Heft wsa third in the 800 (2:36.19).
