  • Both the men’s and lady’s Mavericks varsity basketball teams won their games against the Macksville Mustangs on Friday.
The Lady Mavs were looking for a win following a pair of losses to Ellinwood and South Central and found one against the Lady Mustangs who are now 0-5. The Lady Mavs won 53-22 against the same squad on Dec. 6 at the Keady Classic and repeated their performance with a 56-42 win at home.
The Lady’s overpowered the Stangs all night winning three quarters and shooting .360 from the field.
Angela Liggett scored a team leading 18 points, shooting a whopping .800 from the field with 7 rebounds and a pair of steals.
Katelynn Gamble had her second double digit performance against the Mustangs scoring 10 points, sinking 2-of-3 from the free throw line with a pair of steals.
Riann Heft had a team leading three steals, but struggled at the free throw line, sinking only 1-of-5 on the night.
The men’s team grinded out a last-second win against a tough Macksville team that beat the Mavs 45-38 at the Keady Classic on Dec. 7.
There was no love lost in early quarters as watertight defenses and struggling offenses put pressure on both teams, resulting in some static between Kiowa County’s Damien Odle and Macksville’s Tanner Tranbarger.
The Mavs led 40-33 going into the fourth quarter. While they were able to put 19 points on the board, a surging Mustang squad tied the game with a 26-point fourth.
A Rustin Ardery’s fast break assist to Damien Odle scored the winning lay-up on the final possession.
Overall the Mavericks shot .480 from the field and .580 from the free-throw line.
Caleb Davis continued his outside shooting rampage with 21 total points, including a trio of three’s, and making 4-of-4 from the free-throw line with 5 steals.
Ardery had 18 points with a steal and five rebounds, while Kendall Watson had a nice game, sinking 6-of-10 from the field with a pair of steals.
