Repetition is good in someways but not so good in others as the St. John-Hudson Lady Tigers once again took control of their second straight game of the season early on 14-2 against Ellinwood as they did with Skyline last week 15-0, and easily won their first round match-up against the Eagles 40-23 in Larned's Keady Basketball Classic on Tuesday.
Trouble is they were still missing those darn layups, but this time by the truck load making just 13-33 of them. And that wasn't counting the missed crib shots underneath either.
On the brighter side, the Lady Tigers' defense looked good for most of the night, forcing the Eagles into 32-37 turnovers, depending on which statistician you were talking too. In other words, there wasn't just one Energizer Bunny (Jamie Waters) on the court with the Tigers last night, but a whole slew of them. They did have their problems rebounding though, the Lady Eagles muscling their way into position and out-rebounding the Tigers.
St. John's offense was unselfish and spread out in the first quarter, with six Lady Tigers making one basket apiece, two of them 3-pointers made by Tia Smith and Tara Christie. The Tigers defense gathered in nine Eagle turnovers.
Ellinwoods' turnover problems (6) kept going in the second quarter, but they still outscored the Tigers 9-12. Once again - missed Tiger layups.
Neither team exactly burned the nets in the third, with the Tigers' Jamie Waters doing most of the damage, making three two-pointers, the score going into the final quarter St. John 32 - Ellinwood 18.
The Tigers held Ellinwood to five points in the quarter, but St. John didn't do much better, making just eight.
St. John attempted just one free throw in the first three quarters.
Scoring: Waters 13, Teresa Christie 9, Morgan Osborne 7, Alexis Witt 4, Tara Christie 4, Tia Smith 3.
Free Throws: 3/8 for 37.5 per cent.
Teresa Christie 1, Osborne 1, Tara Christie 1.
Three point goals: St. John 3 (Smith, Tara Christie, Waters ).
