I am in Manhattan this week for training. I was given some statistics from Kansas Kids Count. It shows how each county ranks across the state and the nation. There was a lot of surprising data that I found about our county. I did not know that we had one of the highest infant death rates in the state. According to Kansas Kids Count, Kansas Action for Children, Kiowa County Kansas has 68.97 infant mortalities per 1,000 live births. We do well on our immunizations 86.00% are immmunized as compared to only 70.00% or the state. We have very good prenatal care as 82.76% of our expectant mothers receive prenatal care whereas the state average is 79.01% of expectant mothers receiving prenatal care. We have no violent teen deaths compared with the state average of 36.90 and peer counties have 105.30 per 1000,000 15-19 year olds. We have limited binge drinking compared to the state average of 12.70% and peer county average of 14.10%. Our asthma rate is a little higher at 1.64 per 1,000 compared to 1.44 for state and 1.20 for peer counties of children 18 and under. We have not had any children hospitalized for mental health issues in 2010 or 2011. These are numbers I encourage you to check out as they shocked me, but are quite good, yet there are two or three we need to work on.
Let’s live healthy Kiowa County, we are all in this challenge together.
