Samuel Richard Janzen, age 91, of Harrisonburg, VA died October 17, 2012 at Oak Lea Skilled Care Facility in Harrisonburg, VA. He was born to J. M. and Margaret Janzen in Newton, KS on October 14, 1921. He graduated from Hesston College, Hesston, KS in 1942 and he was ordained to the ministry the same year in September.
He married Lila Mae King of Yoder, KS on September 19, 1943. Together they enjoyed pastorates in Greensburg, KS, Glenwood Springs, CO, Harrisonburg, VA, and Souderton, PA. After a winter of study at Northwestern University in hospital administration, Sam became the hospital administrator for Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg, KS and later for Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, CO. The Janzens moved to Virginia from Colorado when Sam became the full time pastor of Chicago Avenue Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg. After a brief pastorate in Souderton, PA, Sam and Lila Mae returned to Virginia where Sam served as a district overseer for the Virginia Conference of the Mennonite Church from 1984 to 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Lila Mae, and his eight children and their families: Lois Preheim, Freeman, SD, Ruthanne Heatwole, Harrisonburg, VA, J. Melvin, Waynesboro, VA, J. Milton, Newport News, VA, Carla Jacobs, Linville VA, Rebecca Fullmer, Nampa, ID, Deanna Kauffman, Goshen, IN, and Margaret Abderrahmane, Oakland, CA. He had eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. His sister Amy Hershberger, Hesston, KS, three sisters-in-law, Erma Janzen, Boise, ID, Mona Bebe King, Colorado Springs, CO, and Laura Ann King, Scottdale, PA, and many nieces and nephews also mourn his passing.
