Aaron Verl McKinney, 89, died October 9, 2012 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born May 29, 1923, at rural Coldwater, Kansas, the son of Fred J. and Huldah (Craven) McKinney. Verl's mother died when he was but a few days old. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, Aaron and Amanda (Harvey) McKinney. On December 14, 1944, Verl married Arlene Worden. They had one son Richard. Arlene died November 24, 1972. He then married Betty Newsom in 1974. Verl served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He taught for several years at Friends Haviland Academy. Subsequent to that he served as principal at schools in Ford, Haviland, Pawnee Rock, and Larned before retiring in 1988. He is survived by wife Betty, son Richard McKinney, stepson John Newsom and wife Kathy, three brothers Howard, Fred and Francis, and a sister Doris Parker. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012, in the Haviland Cemetery, Haviland, Kansas, with Pastor Francis McKinney officiating.
